Over 35 years of professional teaching and performance experience in a variety of venues. |
June 1975 – Present Skyline College San Bruno
Associate Professor of Music Guitar Studies, and director of Guitar Studies. Currently teaching beginning guitar, intermediate guitar, advanced guitar, improvisation, blues guitar, guitar ensemble, and special projects, such as guitar styles of Eric Clapton, guitar styles of Santana, Miles Davis for guitar etc. Have also taught classical guitar at the college. Following are some accomplishments at Skyline College:
Wrote course of study for each of the classes taught.
- Over 75% of the students participate in recital at the end of the term.
- Program has grown steadily, year after year.
- Music Theory is an integral part of each course.
- Regular nationally known guest artists (at least once per semester) – Have had Pat Kirlty – National Fingerpicking Champion, Jim Nichols known for Jazz and Country, Chet Atkins Appreciation Society Lead artist and others.
- Wrote reference book used in class.
- Attend NAMM every year. Up to date on new equipment and applications. Assist local store in decisions on guitar related products for the store and class.
- Use computer to generate all the materials used in various classes. Have used Finale for notation since V1.0. Further use such programs as Band in a Box, Slowgold, ProTools etc. in the classroom.
- Technology leader in department. Record and mix student finals each term using ProTools.
Continuing Education
During the past ten years, have taken classes such as:
- National Guitar Workshop – Jazz Summit – 5 years. In master class with all professionals, have studied with the following jazz musicians: Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Jim my Bruno, Joe Beck (played with Joe also), Tal Farlow, Adam Rafferty, Barry Greene and others. Studied advanced improvisational techniques, along with modern chord accompany and other Jazz related topics.
- Run the West Coast Master Guitar Camp for past 4 years.
- Course on How to Convince Others of Your Viewpoint.
- Course on the Learning Environment – How to motivate others.
- Web development courses, Powerpoint (use in class) and many other software development courses.
Performance and Leadership
- Recorded and released two CD’s: Kickin’ Back At The Cabin – Solo guitar album released 2004 and Jazz Favorites by Frank Markovich with John Hettle on bass, David RoKeach on drums and special guests Adam Rafferty and Kurt Bittner. Two more albums in the works. Release of each in early 2006.
- For the past 4 years director of “The West Coast Master Jazz Guitar Workshop”. Also have been an active student at the workshop.
- A member of the Central Peninsula Worship Team. Key individual performing at Church Services and special occasions. Have led the worship team when called upon. Play electric guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboard and bass at services. When church lost worship leader, rotated leading worship with 2 other leaders for a period of 2 years. Wrote out the music, ran all rehearsals – both vocal and instrumental and both directed and led the services. Play and at times lead worship for the Higher Power Ministry – a ministry for people in recovery.
- Played for many affairs including all parties etc. for Charles Armstrong School in Belmont. Work with Trey Boothe the director of Music for Charles Armstrong School.
- Former leader of “The Flying Zamboni” band, local group that played for civic and school affairs as well as in nightclubs.
- Some of the performers worked with include: Jim and Morning Nichols, David RoKeach, Wayne Wallace, Greg Adams ( Tower of Power ), Richard Spremich (Malo), Boz Skaggs, John Hettel, and others.
- Work with various individuals on jazz duo’s including: Michael McCort, Larry St. Lezin, and Kurt Bitner. Performed numorous times on the Bruce Lattimur channel 26 TV show including performances with Adam Rafferty, David RoKeach and others.
- Headlined at Pacifica Performances in 2004.
- Played on a number of CD’s including Mark Dobrin’s and Trey Boothe worship CD’s.

1974-1975 Instructor of Music at Contra Costa Community College
Instructor in History of Jazz In American Institutions for a one-year assignment. Decided that commute distance and time were such that it cost more to teach the class than pay warranted. Turned down second year offer.
March 1970 – June 1978 Jefferson Union High School District – Adult education instructor
Instructor in beginning, intermediate and advanced guitar along with a course in music theory at Westmoor, Terra Nova, Serramonte and Jefferson High Schools . Taught classes four nights per week.
September 1965– June 1979 Westlake and Serramonte Music Centers
Private guitar instructor. Average of 40 students per week. Most sought after instuctor at both music stores. Assisted in guitar setups and in merchandising. Did minor guitar repair. Many former students have become profession musicians.
